Wainwright Guides – 50th Anniversary Edition
Alfred Wainwright published his first pictorial guide to the Lakeland fells more than half a century ago in the middle years of the 1900s. They quickly became very popular so that there must now be few lovers of walking in the Lake District who do not have at least one of them. Landscape changes with time and in recent years a 2nd edition has been issued, professionally and tastefully updated to assist the walkers of the early 21st century.
The edition on this page reproduces Wainwright’s original hand-drawn pages without the updates – genuine original Wainwright.

The Alfred Wainwright Memoirs
In Memoirs of a Fellwanderer Wainwright told the story of introduction to the Lake District, holidays and weekend visits from his 1930s industrial Blackburn home, his move to Kendal, and his life of walking the fells. He calls it “fellwandering” but his Lake District walks were not wandering without a plan. He covered these mountains and valleys systematically, soaking up their atmosphere and at the same time taking the many photographs from which his characteristic drawings were later produced when back at home.
